Brilliant day boots-on-the-ground in York for the Eboracum Roman Festival, May 23-24 2026. There is an absolute wealth of inspiration here if you know where to look.
Spent the day going through the Yorkshire Museum, studying the raw archaeological finds, and watching the reenactors bring the heavy, tactile reality of the Roman military to life.
It was also a real pleasure to spend some time talking shop with fellow historical fiction authors Simon Turney and Alex Gough at the festival tents. Two of the best in the business. Picked up some great reading material while I was at it.
As for the research... let's just say I spent a lot of time mapping out the exact geographical footprint of the original fortress, including heading deep into the Undercroft of York Minster to stand right on the raw Roman foundations. Getting a feel for the early mud-and-timber days of the northern frontier.
You never know where the series might head in the future.
